Here’s the Thursday night skinny:
“Mutemath, or Mute Math, or MuteMath (I can’t figure out how they want me to spell it). They’re like the Maroon 5 of indie-pop. I’ve heard they may even be a Christian band. If that was the case we’d have already posted 2 such bands here, which I find ironic. You may find it disorienting or downright unattractive–which is also reasonable. Regardless, the skinny is: they have a keytar player, they’re from N’awlins and they sound suspiciously like a glossier version of The Police. See for yourself lads and ladettes. I’m drinking scotch with honey in it because I can. Cheers.”

I must admit I listened to both tracks over the weekend and several times each, and I am not ashamed…and its not just because, I am southern, or christian, (I think people are calling anything wholesome christian nowadays.) Its because I liked the Police, and the similarity was very clear from the first time I heard each song.

sometimes it’s a little too police-y, and it’s also VERY poppy, but i still manage to enjoy it. i’ve been sick for the past few days, and busy to boot. so i’ll be posting again soon, i hope. stay tuned. we need more contributors.

I am glad to hear that more is coming soon, because that January calender is very spotty. February is short enough as is, so good luck fighting that sickness, with your work, and finding us some “hot new shit.”

Hurt the band? How does exposure hurt this band? I had never heard of them. Then, I listened to these two songs. I dug them. I noticed today that they are playing in Tampa on 3/4. I’m going to get tickets so I can see them live. Please explain how an up-and-coming band can be hurt by someone posting two songs and writing a positive review about them.

Eh. . .kind-of maybe a Christian band. Mute Math has risen from the ashes of the now defunct Christian group Earthsuit (only Mute Math’s guitarist is new to the scene). At one point, Mute Math was signed to Warner Records, but ultimately worked to get out of the deal because Warner wanted to market them under their Christian sublabel, Word Records. The lyrical meanings are ambiguous for a reason. Mute Math doesn’t want to be pigeon-holed as a Christian band.
In regards to being pigeonholed, lead singer Paul Meaney had this to say, “I hate pigeons, because they shit on everything. So if a pigeonhole has anything to do with that, I’ll try to stay clear.”
Christian? Maybe. . .if you want them to be. It certainly helps to understand the lyrics if you look at them from that perspective. If not, you’ll still have no problem enjoying these guys.
Thanks for posting about them.

Mutemath is a Band howm ive listened to since the demize of earthsuit and if a band will not accept terms set by a record company that wil hinder the sound and artisticvalue of the music i agree dont label me that way i really do not like pigeons but what i understand is that paul meany doesnt want to just stop at reaching the christian audience but also the secular I think the world specially the mtv and vh1 world need a little subliminar messages again but this time not satanic like in the past from other bands of which i will not name but they need God in a more simple and non judmental way. of course if you sin you will go to hell but salvation doesnt have to be pushed on to everyone like some sublabels like word at times with out knowing does. i love mutemath and ive had the chance to see them 3 times allready since the creation of the band and i folowed paul ever since earthsuit ive met him and discussed this thing with him.
